Authorities say a Gering man who was taken into custody following a three hour standoff late last night has not been charged criminally but was taken to Regional West Medical Center for a mental evaluation. Gering Police Captain Jason Rogers says because they are taking the mental health route, the man’s name is not being released at this time.
Rogers told us last evening around 10:30 p.m. members from the Gering Police, Fire, and County Sherrif Department and Nebraska State Patrol were on scene at a four-plex in the 2,300 block of Pacific Boulevard. Rogers indicated there was a disturbance and the woman got away but the man locked himself in the bathroom with a weapon, possibly a knife.
It took three hours of negotiations but Rogers says law officers and members of the Crisis Response Team were able to talk the man out and resolve the situation peacefully. Rogers says a knife was recovered from the residence.
Residents from the other three units of the four-plex were told to leave their homes, and neighboring residents were told to lock their doors during the incident.
