Bluffs council postpones implementing restaurant tax

Following the final reading of an ordinance that would provide a one and a half percent restaurant occupation tax, the Scottsbluff City Council Monday evening delayed action on implementing the tax.

Godfathers Pizza owner Dave Thiele presented the council with an informal petition signed by 20 people opposing the tax.

Thiele told the council the majority of those are restaurant owners like himself. He also had customers weigh in on their opinion of the tax with over 300 opposing the tax. Thiele once again said the restaurant tax was a backdoor method of approving a sales tax that was rejected by voters in the May primary.

The council delayed implementing the tax until they could have time to review the petitions Thiele presented.

In other action, the council determined that the East Overland Corridor should be declared blighted and substandard after a number of people spoke in favor of the designation. The designation would allow property owners in that area to use tax increment financing.
