The Panhandle has a new centenarian, as Lucille McGannon celebrated her 100th birthday with her family earlier this month.
McGannon was born on December 12, 1918 in Oelrichs, South Dakota. Woodrow Wilson was President, World War I had just ended, and the Boston Red Sox won the World Series with Babe Ruth.
Lucille married Arthur McGannon, who served in World War II, and then moved to their family ranch in Dawes County.
Over the years, the family grew, and she became a mother, a grandmother, a great-grandmother, and most recently a great-great-grandmother.
She is currently residing in Crawford at the Ponderosa Villa assisted living facility. During her 100th birthday celebration she shared stories of her past- including tales of hardship during the Great Depression- and stories of pure joy and gratitude.
Lucille says all-in-all, she is thankful and has had a good life in Western Nebraska.
