A mother and 6 children escaped a house fire Wednesday morning in Edison. Fire Chief Tim Chapman says the page went out shortly before 9:00am and it was brought under control less than two hours later. There were 27 firefighters on scene with mutual aid from Holbrook, Arapahoe, Beaver City, Oxford, Furnas County Sheriff’s Office and State Fire Marshal’s Office. The cause was determined to have been from a child playing with a lighter.
The house is across the street from the fire hall. When he arrived on scene, Chapman said there was flames and smoke coming out from a side window. The residents were standing outside the front of the house. Chapman said two rooms in the home were totally destroyed. Although he wasn’t able to give an estimate on the amount of loss to structure and contents he suspects the structure may not be “livable”.
The Kearney office of the American Red Cross reached out to the family with emergency shelter and financial assistance.
