Emergency Drill Goes Smoothly At Nielsen Community Center

The Elkhorn Logan Valley Public Health Department held a mass medication dispensing drill at the Nielsen Community Center in West Point on Thursday.

“Everything went great, just as good as we had hoped,” said Gena Ehing, health director for the department. “We had a few hundred students from area schools who came and walked through the procedure with us today. We got done ahead of schedule and so we were really proud of the amount of people we could work through in a small amount of time , so we were really happy with how it went.”

Around 50 volunteers were on hand and some 200 to 300 students.

“We were acting out a drill that if there was a large scale exposure that would require us to medicate a large amount of people to keep from getting sick, so we asked the schools to provide us with a couple hundred students so we could work through what it would be like if we had to medicate a large number of people in a short amount of time. So we had a lot of volunteers here today and we worked the students through the process just as we would if it were a real life event. Now we will take this opportunity to update our plans and to get things better prepared for a real life event. If it weren’t for an exercise like this we would never know how we would perform in a real event so this is a real important step to make sure we’re ready for the real thing.”
