Nebraska U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says President Trump is doing the right thing by trying to stop an illegal immigrant caravan from Mexico.

Fischer was in Scottsbluff-Gering Saturday and told KNEB News the United States cannot allow this type of action, which involves an estimated 5,000 people, to be successful.

Fischer said, “if it is not stopped this time, we know for a fact more will come. It is not good for this country and it is not good for those people that are travelling over a thousand miles in mass. You know there is crime going on,  thefts and assault, families being separated, how do they sleep, how do they eat. This is very dangerous for that vulnerable population as well. ”

Fischer says Congress needs to do something soon to address the immigration issue. But she does not have much confidence it will occur after a bi-partisan proposal offered earlier this year by  Senator Chuck Grassley which she supported got only 39 votes. Fischer said the proposal recommended the spending of $25 billion toward border security and offered a pathway to citizenship for 1.8 million DACA recipients.

Fischer said she felt it was a good compromise that would get Republicans and Democrats to come together on two major issues, and was frustrated that did not happen .

Fischer said, “We need to address this immigration situation we have and we need to address legal immigration changes that can be made to benefit our country and we need to do it soon.  I felt I stepped forward and compromised and was disappointed my colleagues didn’t. “
