On October 1, 2016 at approximately 6:19 am the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a head on collision on Highway 6 & 34 approximately 2 miles east of Holbrook, Nebraska. The reporting party advised one of the persons involved in the accident was assaulting people.
Deputies arrived and made contact with a white 42-year-old male from Orland Park, Illinois. The suspect began to fight the deputies and after a brief struggle was placed into custody. The suspect was transported to Tri Valley ER in Cambridge to be medically cleared for jail. Due to his injuries the suspect was transferred to Good Sameritan Hospital in Kearney.
A husband and wife who had been traveling east on highway 6 & 34 in a Chevy HHR were transported to Tri Valley ER for their injuries they sustained in the collision. Both husband and wife were using their seat belts at the time of the accident.
An investigation was completed on the scene. Investigating officers learned that after the suspect was involved in the head on collision he began to assault people who had stopped to render aid. After assaulting people he stole a Ford Expedition and drove towards the west. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway crashing the Expedition into a corn field.
As a result of the investigation the male suspect is charged with felony theft, felony criminal mischief, two counts of assault on an officer, three counts of third degree assault, misdemeanor criminal mischief, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence of drugs.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Holbrook Edison Arapahoe (HEA) Fire Department and the Cambridge Fire Department.
This case is still under investigation by the Furnas County Sheriff’s Office.
