Gering council confirms community’s vote with passage of LB 840 ordinance

The Gering city council Monday evening approved an ordinance confirming the voter’s renewal of the city’s 1/2 cent LB 840 sales tax for economic development.

Over 20 businesses have been started or retained… 14 existing companies have expanded… with the creation or retention of more than 200 jobs since the city started the program in 2004.

It is the third time the sales tax has been renewed since its initial approval and Mayor Tony Kaufman says the citizens now understand the importance of the tax.

Kaufman said, ” Our LB 840 tax has been in place long enough in the community that voters know it has been a proven tool that we have leveraged well over the years. We’ve created some jobs and  enhanced our downtown and other areas. We got the word out and I think the community responded. ”

The voters approval and the ordinance passed Monday night allow the city to use up to $300,000 a year of sales and use taxes for economic development over an additional 10 years.
