Gering to seek new Finance Director after Council rejects Mejia appointment

The city of Gering will be looking for a new Finance Director starting Tuesday.

The Gering City Council Monday night voted 5-3 against the reappointment of John Mejia to the post. Mejia had been city Finance Director for the past 12 years.

Mayor Tony Kaufman says the process to find Mejia’s replacement will begin with a review of the position’s requirements over the next 30 days, and a search will likely take about 3 to 5 months. However, Kaufman expressed confidence a new Finance Director will be in place before city officials have to start work next year on the 2019-2020 fiscal budget.

Kaufman said state statutes give city councils the ability to review appointments of certain staff members whenever a new mayor is selected.

The council took the action following the swearing-in of Mayor Kaufman and Councilmembers Dan Smith, Pam O’Neal, Julie Morrison and Phil Holliday. Morrison was also selected as Council President.
