Gering Mayor Tony Kaufman has been authorized by the City Council to tell the state the city will be submitting a proposal for a matching grant through the Civic and Community Center Financing Fund program.
If selected for a grant, the city would use the money to help pay for expansion of the Gering Civic Center to provide more room for vendors and information booths.
Mayor Kaufman says there’s no guarantee the city will get the funding, but it’s an opportunity they can’t pass up. “When the Legislature last year allocated a match grant funding up to 50% dollar for dollar, it’s kind of a no-brainer,” says Kaufman, “Those kind of grants don’t come available very often, so we would qualify for about $560,000.”
Kaufman says with the addition of the Cobblestone Hotel nearby, the Civic Center qualifies for larger conferences and conventions. However, he says these days, event organizers are looking for more booth space as the vendor fees tend to pay for the cost of booking a venue.
