Gering High School’s Mock Trial team made it to the finals of the State Mock Trial contest this past week, coming in as runner-up to a team from Creighton Prep.
Three members of the team made their arguments as the prosecution in a mock drug case before contest judges, and a real judge, at the Federal courthouse in Omaha
Teacher and coach Andy Stobel says even though the students were bested by the Bluejays, the Gering students put on an outstanding performance. “There’s so much thinking on your feet, and adjusting on the fly, that it’s not like a performance you would see in the theater,” says Stobel, “it’s more like watching someone in the heat of the moment adjusting, and countering and making objections with witnesses responding to attorneys on cross-examination.”
Stobel tells KNEB News that he’s only had one student from his mock trial teams move on to a law career, but the work does get students considering the possibilities of future law-related employment.
