Members of the Heartland Expressway Association are pleased the first round of highway projects in the new Transportation package passed last year includes two major phases of the Heartland Expressway.
Widening Highway 26 to 4 lanes from Minatare to Highway 385 is one of 8 long-delayed highway projects getting construction funds. Heartland Expressway Association Treasurer Deb Cottier of Chadron says the $60-million dollar project is more important to the northern panhandle than people think. Cottier says the widening will increase traffic to the Chadron area and give the Heartland Expressway the traffic counts it needs to receive additional funding to complete it.
Cottier is also pleased design money is earmarked for upgrading Highway 385 from Alliance to Chadron to “Super 2” status with wider lanes and more-frequent passing lanes.
