A 21-year-old Hebron man was arraigned in Thayer County Court Monday afternoon in connection with a weekend shooting at his residence. Michael Lewis faces First Degree Assault and a weapons charge in connection with the shooting of 33-year-old Reuben Elting.

The series of events began with a disturbance between multiple parties around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday at a Davenport residence. According to the Nebraska State Patrol, that incident prompted another around 3:20 a.m. at Lewis’s residence Hebron. During the second incident, two men were shot, 28-year-old Remington Elting was transported to Thayer County Health Services in Hebron and was later pronounced deceased. Reuben Elting, 33, was flown to Bryan Medical Center at Bryan West Campus in Lincoln in critical condition. Both Elting brothers are from Davenport.

The Thayer County Sheriff’s Office and Nebraska State Patrol are conducting the investigation and more charges could be added.

At the arraignment, Wade Lewis testified for the defense. County Judge Linda Bauer set Michael Lewis’ bond at 10% of $250,000. A preliminary hearing was set for November 9, 2018 at 10:00am.

A Nebraska State Patrol report sheds more light on the incidents leading to Lewis’ arrest. At the disturbance in Davenport, Thayer County deputies responded to a call of a physical confrontation and a firearm being brandished. Lewis was identified as allegedly pointing a gun at another subject during the incident.

Nearly two hours later, Lewis called Thayer County dispatch and reported that he caught two people breaking into his residence and that he shot them. Lewis told an investigator he was confronted at the front door and was able to shut and lock the door.

He then retrieved a handgun and responded to banging on the side door of the residence, according to the report. He was confronted by Remington Elting and an altercation ensued with Lewis shooting Remington Elting with the handgun. Reuben Elting then began approaching and Lewis shot at him.
