A man involved in a series of bizarre incidents Saturday morning appeared in Furnas County Court Monday. Christopher Schellenberger of Orlando Park, IL is being held on 10% of $200,000 bond. The 42-year-old man faces 14 charges stemming from an initial report of a head-on collision around 6:19am Saturday on Highway 6 & 34 about two miles east of Holbrook. A husband and wife traveling in one of the vehicles were transported to a Cambridge hospital for their injuries. The other driver, identified as Schellenberger allegedly began to fight with Furnas County Sheriff’s deputies, first responders and citizens at the scene. He was placed into custody after a brief struggle and transported to the hospital in Cambridge and then to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Furnas County Sheriff Kurt Kapperman said investigating officers learned that after the suspect was involved in the head on collision he began to assault people who had stopped to render aid. After assaulting people he stole a Ford Expedition and drove towards the west. The suspect lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway crashing the Expedition into a corn field. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Holbrook Edison Arapahoe Fire Department and the Cambridge Fire Department.

Charges against Schellenberger include Felony Theft, 3 counts of assault on an officer or health care worker, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Felony Criminal Mischief, Driving Under the Influence, three counts of Third Degree Assault, Resisting Arrest, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident without furnishing information and Possession of Marijuana-more than an ounce but, less than a pound. He is being held in the Lincoln County Detention Center. His next hearing is set for October 24, 2016 at 8:30am.
