The Kearney Police Department has established a suspect by the name of Jesse Hanes in regards to the Attempted Robbery that took place at the Bank of the West in Kearney, Nebraska on August 1, 2016. Jesse Hanes is originally from Ohio and is currently in custody on various charges from Ohio and New Mexico. Those charges include 1st Degree Murder from an incident in Ohio on July 25, 2016. He is also charged with the murder of Officer Chavez of the Hatch New Mexico Police Department, which occurred on August 12, 2016. Hanes is also being held on numerous weapons and carjacking charges.
This is an ongoing investigation, and the Kearney Police Department is working with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other Law Enforcement Agencies at this time. No arrest warrant has been issued for the attempted robbery in Kearney at this point in the investigation.
A man attempted to rob the Bank of the West in Kearney late Monday afternoon. It was reported around 4:52pm as a subject approached a teller and demanded money from the bank. The suspect then left the bank abruptly without any money. The suspect is described as a white male, 5’11” to 6′, 140 to 160 pounds in his mid-30’s. He was wearing a blue long sleeve shirt, Khaki pants, dark ball cap, glasses and it appears the suspect has a goatee type facial hair. The suspect was last seen running north out of the banks west door. No injuries were reported. No suspect vehicles were seen by witnesses.
