Krist discusses property tax relief during panhandle stops

The Democratic nominee for Governor says lawmakers have to begin discussing property tax reform earlier in the next session and allow for more options for tax relief to be debated on the floor.

State Senator Bob Krist told KNEB News after attending a town hall meeting in Bridgeport and a gathering in Scottsbluff Wednesday that a solution will require the new Governor to cooperate with lawmakers on possible solutions and not dictate what will be discussed.

Krist says twenty years ago 20% of the state’s income tax revenue was used to finance education. Now three percent of income tax funds education and Nebraska is ranked 49th among the fifty states in the amount of state aid it provides K-12 education.

Krist believes production and processing of industrial hemp and collecting internet sales tax as state law requires, along with elimination of select sales tax exemptions can help provide the additional revenue for state education.
