Local counterfeiters sentenced to jail

Two men involved in a counterfeiting investigation in Scotts Bluff County were sentenced to jail terms Wednesday morning in District Court

23-year-old Billy Day, who was charged with forgery as part of an investigation into the production of counterfeit bills in a Morrill garage, was sentenced to a year in jail by District Judge Leo Dobrovolny.

Day was given credit for 160 days served in jail and is also wanted by Texas authorities on a similar charge. After his release he has and has already waived extradition

30-year-old Shawn McDermott of Scottsbluff was sentenced to 180 days in jail for attempted forgery and was given credit for 138 days  in jail, which allowed him to be released with a nine month post-release supervision order by Dobrovolny.

McDermott was accused of using counterfeit dollars from the Morrill operation to make a purchase at Wal-Mart and then exchanging the item for real money. The court indicated previous to the Wal-Mart purchase McDermott had been unsuccessful in making a drug transaction with the false money.
