The Nebraska Bankers Association (NBA) has recognized former State Senator Thomas Hansen of North Platte with the 2016 NBA Agri-business Recognition Award for outstanding service to agriculture. The award was presented during the NBA’s Fall Agri-business Conference, held Sept. 1-2 at The Cornhusker Marriott in Lincoln, Neb.
The NBA’s Agri-business Recognition Award has been presented each year since 1983 to individuals who have made significant contributions to the state of Nebraska and its agricultural industry.
A cattleman by trade, Hansen has a passion for Nebraska agriculture and one of Nebraska’s most valuable resources — water. Prior to his election to the Nebraska Legislature representing District 42 and Lincoln County, he spent nearly 30 years voicing his concerns at the State Capitol about numerous matters, including water, cattle, and environmental issues, among others.
Hansen’s roots in politics run deep as his grandfather served in the Nebraska Legislature from 1924 to 1937. During Hansen’s two terms in the Legislature, which ran from 2007 to 2015, he served on a variety of committees, including Agriculture; Business and Labor; Revenue; Health and Human Services; Banking, Commerce, and Insurance; and Appropriations. In addition, he was vice president of the Building and Maintenance Committee, and chairman of the Committee on Committees.
Hansen was born and raised in North Platte, graduating from North Platte High School in 1965. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1970. Following graduation, Hansen and his wife Linda returned to North Platte to assist with the family ranching business, Hansen 77 Ranch LLC, where he currently serves as secretary/treasurer.
Over the years, Hansen has served as a member and leader of many organizations and boards, including the Nebraska Cattlemen Association as president, Lincoln County Cattlemen, Lincoln County Feeders and Ranchers, Mid-Nebraska Community Foundation, Mid-Plains Community Foundation, Twin Platte Natural Resources District, Nebraska Brand Committee, Nebraska Cattlemen Research and Education Foundation, Nebraskaland Days, Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation, and the North Platte Noon Rotary Club — just to name a few.
As a result of the tremendous amount of personal time and resources he has given to help the community of North Platte and the state of Nebraska, Hansen has received numerous awards and honors such as the Dale Studley Award, Nebraska Children’s Home Society Honors, UNL Agricultural Hall of Fame, UNL Ag Builders, and North Platte High School Distinguished Alumni.
Tom and his wife, Linda, have two grown children and several grandchildren. He is devoted to his family and to serving his community, his county, his state, and the land on which we live.
