Many people may say the key problem facing Nebraska is property tax relief, but the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce says finding quality workers is really the biggest issue.
President Barry Kennedy told the Scottsbluff Rotary Club Tuesday workforce recruitment and retention is the biggest challenge facing businesses.
Kennedy says Nebraska’s onerous tax system doesn’t help the workforce issue. Nebraska ranks as the 49th worst state for combined state and local taxes according to a study cited by the Chamber, and Kennedy says while property tax relief is needed, lawmakers should immediately address a blatantly unfair income tax system.
Kennedy says the 6.84% highest income tax rate should be lowered to under 6% and the highest income tax bracket needs to be raised drastically from the $29,000 level, which leaves most Nebraskans paying the same tax rate as Warren Buffett.
