NORFOLK – The Allied Health Department at Northeast Community College has scheduled another Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) class in September.

The course (HLTH 5500/18F & CRN #60131) will be held Wednesday and Thursday, September 5 and 6, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Room at Faith Regional Health Services, 2700 W. Norfolk Avenue in Norfolk.

This course encompasses knowledge and techniques which are utilized in the definitive management of a cardiac arrest or similar life-threatening emergency. Participation in this course enables the registrant to review didactic material as well as practice lifesaving techniques and skills under the direction of an instructor in a simulated situation.

Completion of this program is based on criteria established by the American Heart Association. Pre-course requirements include review of manual and completion of ACLS pre-course online self-assessment test. Participants are asked to print their test score and bring it to class, along with their current Basic Life Support CPR card.

Cost of the class is $160. A book is available in the Hawks Shop in the Northeast Student Center.

Pre-registration is required. To register, call Northeast Community College at (402) 844-7000.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a series of classes on digital photography during the month of September.

Digital Photography I (ARTS 5105/18F & CRN #60188) will be held Thursday, September 6 from 6-9 p.m. in the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, Room 212, at 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

In this beginning course, participants will learn the basics of their digital cameras. They will learn the different controls and modes the camera has to offer as well as how to compose a good image. Different brands of cameras as well as various lens options will also be discussed. This class is the first step to moving from auto mode to full manual.

Digital Photography II (ARTS 5305/18F & CRN #60189) will be held Thursday, September 13, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

During this class, participants will build on what they learned in week one by becoming familiar with other photography gear like memory cards and batteries. They will also learn about additional items, such as umbrellas, flashes, soft boxes and other gear.

Digital Photography III (ARTS 5500/18F & CRN #60190) will be held Thursday, September 20, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

In this final part of the series, participants will take what they’ve learned about ISO, aperture and shutter speed and move into full manual mode. They will practice what they have learned during a real photo shoot as the instructor guides them as they learn how to compose a good shot, work with lighting and take great photos in manual mode.

Erin Beutler is the instructor for all classes. Cost of each course is $30.

To register for any or all of the courses, call Northeast Community College in West Point at (402) 372-2269.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a new class soon to help toddlers develop their musical skills.

Mommy & Me Sing (HORC 5150/18F & CRN #60275) will be held three consecutive Thursdays, September 6-20, from 5:30-6:20 p.m. in the preschool room at St. Paul’s Lutheran School, 325 N. Colfax Street, in West Point.

Children are born with skills to excel in music, but this will diminish if the child is not exposed to different music techniques. According to leading early childhood researchers, most musical skills are learned from birth to the age of nine, when they establish their sense of pitch and rhythm. In this class, mom and their toddlers will learn simple songs, continuous movements, how to keep a beat and rhymes to help develop their skills.

The course is suitable for children ages two to pre-kindergarten.

Cost for the course, with Emma Stokely the instructor, is $15.

To register, call Northeast Community College in West Point at (402) 372-2269.
