Northeast Community College to offer mid-to-late February classes at area campuses

Northeast Community College is offering a number of classes at their West Point, Norfolk, and Hartington Campuses in the middle to late part of February. Class information can be found below:

 

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a commodities class for those in the agriculture industry beginning this month.

Commodities – Trading Basics & Strategies (AGRI 5115/18S & CRN #70246) will be held Thursdays, February 15-March 15, from 7-9 p.m. in Room 212 of the West Point extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

Taught via distance learning, this class is designed for those in the agriculture industry, including but not limited to, ethanol plants, grain producers, cattle feeders and others. Topics to be covered includes commodities, trading basics, contracts, futures and options.

Cost of the course, with Roger Hansen the instructor, is $80.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/18S & CRN #70224) is web-based and is available on-line
24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, February 17, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

Cost of the class, with Brock Soderberg the instructor, is $40.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/18S & CRN #70202); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/18S & CRN #70203); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/18S & CRN #70201) will be held Saturday, February 17, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification. This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. NORFOLK –A new course for manager, supervisors and other leaders will be offered by Northeast Community College soon.

Roles & Responsibilities of a Leader (LEAD 5120/18S & CRN #70094) will meet Tuesday, February 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, 609 W. Norfolk Ave., in Norfolk.

Leaders, managers and supervisors participating in this session will obtain practical knowledge as they explore the roles and responsibilities of being a leader. For new managers and leaders, this class will assist them in navigating the dysfunctional structures and procedures that many of them inherit and also limit the number of difficult situations they may encounter. This training will instruct managers and leaders to look beyond assumptions and past perceptions of the company and help them focus on the bigger picture.

Cost of the course, with Dan Kuester the instructor, is $120.

WEST POINT – Learn the stiches, tools and techniques to get started with crochet through a new class at Northeast Community College in West Point.

Crochet Basics (HOEC 5130/18S & CRN #70146) meets consecutive Wednesdays, February 21 and 28, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue, Room 201.

Instructor Carol Schuetze will provide step-by-step instruction for getting started – from selecting the right yarn and deciphering tricky yarn labels to properly holding a hook and working with yarn. Participants will appreciate Schuetze’s down-to-earth approach as she teaches them a basic chain stitch and demonstrates single, double and half-double crochet and the slip stitch. Students will also learn how to work in rows, keep their crochet on track and troubleshoot rows gone wrong.

NORFOLK – A new course at Northeast Community College will welcome the spring seasons with a wood pallet decoration class.

Wooden Pallet Leprechaun & Easter Bunny (HOEC 5135/18S & CRN #70194) will be held Thursday, February 22, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 113A at the Chuck M. Pohlman Agriculture Complex, east of Northeast’s Norfolk campus.

Participants will make a simple and attractive spring-themed decoration for the home. Using wood pallets, paint, and a little creativity, they will create a reversible leprechaun/Easter Bunny decoration. Instructor Russell Flaming will walk participants through the planning and construction stages, and the projects will be assembled and painted in class.

Cost of the class is $40. All supplies are included.

WEST POINT – A class on hand embroidery will be offered soon at Northeast Community College in West Point.

Hand Embroidery (HOEC 5135/18S & CRN #70147) meets Thursday, February 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue, Room 201.

In this hands-on introductory class, Instructor Connie Nebuda will walk participants through embroidery basics, from choosing fabrics and floss, to hooping up and crafting ten stitches. Embroidery can be used in a number of different ways, including hand towels, baby quilts, quilt blocks and more.
