Northeast to host series of summer career camps for high school students

NORFOLK, NE – High school students will have the opportunity to explore a world of career possibilities at a series of summer career camps being offered at Northeast Community College this summer.

The free-of-charge, two-day camps will be hosted on the Northeast campus in Norfolk and will give participants the opportunity to learn from faculty and work in College facilities on a variety of hands-on activities.

Health and Wellness Summer Career Camp will be held Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31, on Camp meets 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Students will learn more about the healthcare industry as they take part in hands-on activities led by instructors, healthcare professionals and Northeast students; ask questions and learn from professionals in various fields; learn the next steps as they plan their careers; and visit one-on-one with Northeast students and faculty about the college application process, admissions requirements and student experience. Participants will also learn more about the paramedic, nursing, personal training and physical therapist assistant programs offered at Northeast.

The camp is available to students who will be in grades 10 through 12 for the 2018-19 school year and are at least 16 years of age. Registration is limited to the first 30 applicants.

Ag-Citing Camp will meet Tuesday, June 12, and Wednesday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Campers will spark their imaginations and get their hands dirty as they learn about agriculture and related career opportunities. They will participate in hands-on activities at the College farm, in the greenhouse and in the laboratory. They will also tour and meet professionals in the agriculture industry as they learn about how Northeast can prepare them for ag-related careers.

Registration is limited to the first 20 applicants and is available to students who will be in grades 9 through 12 for the 2018-19 school year.

Raspberry Pi Karaoke will be held Thursday, June 21, and Friday, June 22, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days.

This camp includes hands-on activities to build skills and knowledge used in every career level of information technology. Campers will build a karaoke machine from scratch utilizing the HDMI and audio outputs of Raspberry Pi, a small, single board computer, along with a web-based application that can play karaoke files. They will learn how to solder electrical connections and write code while creating their project start to finish.

All camps are partially funded with federal Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006 funds administered through the Nebraska Department of Education, grant number V048A170027.
