The 24th Annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Dawson County is gearing up to make magic happen in the fight against cancer! This year’s theme is “A Cure Is A Magical Thing” and will play prominently in the overall décor and fun during the event on Friday, June 22, at Veterans Memorial Park in Cozad.
“This year’s theme speaks for itself. When a cure comes along for any type of cancer, it is like a magician making a rabbit disappear! Just simply ‘Poof’ this evil monster called cancer is gone and hopefully to never reappear again,” said Reuben Hoff of Cozad, this year’s event chairperson. “But the true magic in it is the hope that it creates in one’s spirit that as long as we keep on fighting there is a chance for yet another person to experience this magic of a cure.”
Hoff is a cancer survivor. Last year at Relay, he told his story during the luminaria ceremony. Diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2013, Hoff learned the disease has a survival rate of 20 percent to 25 percent. He went through a long period of treatments and complications before receiving a lifesaving stem cell transplant in April 2014 from his sister who was a perfect match. During his recuperation, he developed a severe case of pneumonia in December. With this added health set back, Hoff says doctors, family, prayer and the grace of God brought him back to good health.
He and his wife, Dinna, own and operate New Life Interiors in Cozad. The business was formerly known as Hoff’s Tops & More which opened in 2003 before cancer struck. Changing the name reflects the family’s philosophy of being given a “new life” to live after battling cancer.
As the new event lead, Hoff is actively recruiting committee members and helpers for the event, as well as teams to sign up and raise money for the American Cancer Society.
“I believe every person who is fighting cancer, been newly diagnosed, fought the battle and won or lost is either giving or has given a touch of magic to someone. Life is a magical thing to experience. It is full of so many things that just make you go ‘WOW’ or gives you a sense of “AH” and wonder,” Hoff said.
“So for me, I fight and I pray. I keep getting up to a new day to give hope to those fighting the battle against cancer. To give them the magic in life, the magic of a smile or a hug that may not stop cancer in its tracks, but cures the ache of the heart and shows we care enough to help keep fighting another day. There may be a cure right around the corner that doctors and researchers have just discovered to wave at cancer and make it disappear!”
