Scott Bluff Commissioners approve agreement to house Wyoming inmates

The Scottsbluff County Commissioners have approved a three-year agreement with the state of Wyoming to allow inmates from that state to be housed at the County Detention Center in Gering.

Board Chairman Mark Masterton says the board has always seen the jail as a regional facility that could take in detainees from other jurisdictions that are facing overcrowding issues. “I still believe that, handled properly, we can make money on the side of it where we handle prisoners for other entities, not necessarily our own,” says Masterton. “We still have to foot the bill for that.”

Masterton tells KNEB News the costs of new jails has risen exponentially, and building a new facility such as the original Detention Center constructed in 2008 would cost more than twice what it did back then.  He says that means other jurisdictions such as the state and federal governments will be seeking ways to relieve overcrowding at current prisons.

Masterton says there is more land available at the facility should the local detainee population become an issue again.
