After serving the Scottsbluff area for years, the Kmart store will be closing its doors in December.
Howard Riefs, the Director of Corporate Communications for Sears Holdings confirmed the closure to KNEB News on Friday afternoon.
“We can confirm that we are making the difficult, but necessary to decision to close the Kmart store at 802 East 27th Street in Scottsbluff,” said Riefs.
Riefs says until the mid-December closing, the store will remain open for its customers, and will begin a liquidation sale starting on Thursday, September 22nd.
“We have been strategically and aggressively evaluating our store space and productivity, and have accelerated the closing of unprofitable stores,” adds Riefs. “We often hear from our members who are disappointed when we close a store, but our Shop Your Way membership platform, websites and mobile apps allow us to maintain these valued relationships long after a store closes its doors. ”
Riefs says the number of people whose jobs will be lost is not publicly available, but those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open position at other Sears or Kmart stores. He adds that most of the Kmart employees are part time, hourly employees.
