A westbound semi pulling a flatbed trailer hauling train wheels rolled Wednesday morning at 7:30 east of Overton.  Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Amanda Hunt explained what happened…

“All we know at this time is a semi truck was traveling westbound on Interstate-80…(and) due to reasons we’re not quite 100-percent sure about…he went off onto the shoulder, probably tried to over-correct it and then flipped it…came to rest in the middle (median) of the Interstate.”

Trooper Hunt says the driver, who was not wearing a restraint, is going to be OK….

“He’s good right now…he’s in Kearney, minor head lacerations…that’s about it.”

The driver is from Kissimme, Florida, but the State Patrol did not release his name. The semi rollover about two-miles east of Overton blocked both lanes. Law enforcement responded by closing the westbound lanes at Elm Creek and sending traffic to US Highway 30. The force of the accident caused three freight train wheels strapped onto the flatbed trailer to be sent hurtling into the north ditch. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The semi-tractor and trailer received considerable damage in the rollover.

RRN/ Interstate 80 westbound traffic was diverted at the Elm Creek interchange Wednesday morning August 31, 2016. This is the Highway 30 interchange at Elm Creek where travelers could continue westbound around the accident scene.

The train wheels were loaded onto a large wrecker using a hydraulic winch. Both westbound lanes of I-80 were reopened at 10 a.m.

The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office also provided assistance at the scene. The Nebraska Department of Roads dispatched personnel to cleanup debris and make repairs to the road and shoulder of I-80.

A moderate amount of fog was present at the time of the crash, but it was not believed to have been a contributing factor to the accident.
