A multiple vehicle accident just east of the Gibbon interchange on Interstate 80 occurred late Friday afternoon. Three deaths have been confirmed, the extend of any other injuries has not been confirmed. The fiery accident involved two semis and two pickups according to the Nebraska State Patrol. Westbound Interstate 80 traffic was closed from Wood River to Kearney. Highway 30 from Wood River west was very clogged. The State Patrol is asking travelers to take alternate routes such as Highway 34 through Cairo and Ravenna or Highway 14 down to Clay Center and Highway 6 through Minden.
A communications specialist with Nebraska State Patrol is asking travelers to be “very kind” as they deal with the traffic situation and be mindful that “this is someone’s worst day.”
Several vehicles were involved in an accident late Friday afternoon near the Gibbon interchange on Interstate 80. At least one of the vehicles caught fire. The west bound lane was littered with cargo from an overturned semi pulling a cargo trailer. Westbound traffic was being diverted off the Interstate at the Wood River interchange. Eastbound lanes of traffic was reportedly moving but, slow. The nearby Windmill State Recreation Area was closed. Detoured traffic on Highway 30 westbound from Wood River was also reportedly moving at a slow pace or at a standstill at times.
