Smith disappointed in national anthem protests

Smith disappointed in national anthem protests
Congressman Adrian Smith delivers his opening statement at the Ways and Means Committee markup on his bill, the Co-Op Consumer Protection Act.

Third District Congressman Adrian Smith says he is disappointed with athletes who are protesting  social and economic inequality by not standing for the national anthem.

Smith says the playing of the national anthem should be a time when the athletes recognize the advantages they have in being an American.

Smith said, ” I would hope athletes who are role models for million of people around the world could at the very least stand and show respect for a country that has given them fantastic opportunity.”

Smith says America is not perfect, but “there is some much to be thankful and grateful for.” Smith says the protests are a continued example of a divisive country, not just socially but also politically.
