Some minor injuries following a school bus accident Friday morning about 8 miles east of Gothenburg. According to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, it occurred around 7:44am as a Gothenburg school bus was traveling southbound on a rural road when it went into a ditch and remained upright. According to the preliminary report, the bus went into the ditch on the right side of the road, hit a culvert, went over a driveway and into a canal where it came to rest after striking another culvert.
A message sent to parents from Gothenburg Public Schools indicates that as part of their standard operating procedure, all nine students and the bus driver were transported to Gothenburg Memorial Hospital to be examined. Two students and one adult were treated.
The Sheriff’s Office says seatbelts were in use by the driver. Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department and Cozad Police Department assisted. The Gothenburg Schools’ message said the bus slid on loose gravel before entering the ditch. The Sheriff’s Office is also considering whether driver distraction was a contributing factor.
