Conservative Republicans who want to unseat Nebraska lawmakers are finding a new ally in Gov. Pete Ricketts, who is actively working
to elect like-minded senators who promise to stay true to their word.

Ricketts tells The Associated Press he’s endorsing legislative challengers who have pledged to govern as they campaigned and who reflect what he believes are their constituents’ wishes.

The Republican governor says he wants a more conservative Legislature that will deliver on promises to lower taxes and slow state spending growth.

Some incumbent senators say Ricketts is trying to control the Legislature after a series of major defeats during his first year. Lawmakers overrode Ricketts’ veto of bills to abolish the death penalty, raise the gas tax and allow drivers’ licenses for youths brought to the country illegally.
