SPPD warns of scam callers

Southern Power District is issuing a warning to the public, to be weary of callers who attempt to collect on power bills.

We have seen an increase this week in the number of suspicious calls being reported by businesses. Phone scammers are contacting local businesses and are presenting themselves as representatives of Southern Power District. They are demanding immediate payment for accounts that are reportedly “past due”. Recipients of these calls are being told that their meter will be disconnected if they fail to pay their bill.

While the surge of phone calls taking place are currently targeting businesses, we urge all customers, including residential customers, to heed this word of caution and to be skeptical if you receive this type of phone call.

If you receive a phone call from a person claiming to be a representative of Southern Power District, hang up the phone and contact Southern at 800-579-3019. We will verify for you the current status of your account. We also encourage you to contact local law enforcement if you receive such a call.
