LINCOLN, Neb. – A Nebraska Department of Correctional Services staff member was assaulted at the Nebraska State Penitentiary on Wednesday, October 5.
Two inmates used homemade weapons to strike a staff member multiple times. Chemical agents were used to stop the assault and gain control of the inmates. The staff member was transported to a local medical facility for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries and released.
“We house many violent and dangerous individuals, but we will not tolerate violence within our prisons” said Director Scott R. Frakes. “We will continue to hold accountable those involved in orchestrating and carrying out violent acts.” As a result of the incident, NSP is in modified operations.
The names of the staff member and inmates will not be released. Frakes added, “Individuals who assault others are held accountable through the internal disciplinary process, which includes the potential loss of good time and other sanctions. They are assigned to restrictive housing based on the risk they present to others. In addition, assaults are investigated, and the results referred to the local county attorney.”
