An 18-year-old from Gering man sustained injuries following a Sunday evening accident in Morrill.
Morrill Police Corporal Mike Youngquist says that at 6:50 p.m., Joel Garcia was driving eastbound on Webster. He reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic. Garcia struck a utility pole in front of the Kwik Stop, and then hit a pile of decorative bricks by the street entrance of Penny’s Diner.
Corporal Youngquist says Garcia’s car then spun around and struck another utility pole, then drifted backwards and came to rest on the highway facing west.
Garcia was trapped in the vehicle and was transported to Regional West Medical Center. As of Wednesday morning, Garcia was not listed in the hospital’s directory.
Youngquist says the vehicle traveled approximately 200 feet altogether from the first point of impact to where it came to rest.
There are no pending charges or citations, however Corp. Youngquist believes Garcia was speeding at the time of the accident.
