The Nebraska Supreme Court has upheld the Box Butte County first degree murder convictions of 30 year old Dominick Dubray, who was given two life sentences in the February 2012 stabbing deaths of his 22 year old girlfriend Catalina Chavez and her 42 year old stepfather Mike Loutzenhiser.
The multiple stabbing deaths occurred at the Alliance home that Dubray and Chavez shared. Dubray also suffered multiple stab wounds after efforts to commit suicide following the murders.
Dubray maintained he had ineffective counsel that failed to adequately argue his self-defense strategy. Dubray also claimed inadequate counsel resulted in prejudice against the defendant, who is a Native American. The Supreme Court dismissed each claim, indicating Dubray had failed to show enough evidence to support his allegations.
