A Regional West employee has been arrested for Felony Child Abuse and Child Neglect after locking her 4-year-old daughter in a closet at work.
31-year-old Silvia Garcia reportedly brought her child to work on September 16th. Court documents say Garcia brought her daughter to the Behavioral Health Unit on the 5th Floor, and locked her in a cleaning and supply closet.
A RWMC security supervisor provided Scottsbluff Police with surveillance video to review the incident. Over the course of one hour and sixteen minutes, Garcia checked on her daughter a total of eight times- each for about a minute.
On Wednesday, an officer went to the hospital to look at the closet, which had dirty and clean linen, a soap dispenser, but no toxic chemicals.
On Thursday, Garcia came to the Police Department for an interview. She told officers her daughter was sick and her daycare would not take her and her sister was unable to watch her. Garcia said she thought her daughter was only in the closet for about 20 minutes, and gave her a phone to play games while she cleaned.
Officers were going to give her a citation, but Garcia said she would not go to court because she was leaving for Mexico on Sunday. Since she stated she was not going to court, they deemed her a flight risk, arrested her and transported her to the Scotts Bluff County Jail.
