Wyoming’s secretary of state has resigned following accusations by two women of sexual misconduct decades ago.
Republican Ed Murray said in a statement Friday that he was stepping down with “peace and serenity” to focus on his marriage, family and health.
Murray was elected in 2014 and was considering a run this year for governor. Murray was accused by one woman of sexually attacking her more than 35 years ago and by another woman of forcibly kissing her in front of his house after he and his wife came home on New Year’s Eve in 1988.
Murray denied the first instant and said he didn’t recall the second.
Gov. Matt Mead will appoint a successor until a new secretary of state is elected later this year.
