It wasn’t easy for Wade Blue.
But the payoff was big.
On Wednesday afternoon the hulking senior senior signed to attend school and continue his throwing career on the track and field team at the University of Nebraska.
A tireless worker with a motor that never stops, Blue has overcome numerous setbacks in his high school career. His work ethic and drive to succeed has helped him deal with and come back from a multitude of injuries to get to this point.
Blue has excelled in multiple areas at Gering High School. Obviously he’s turned into one of the best throwers in the state (I mean, just look at him) plus he’s been a key figure in helping get the weight program back on solid footing, becoming the absolute leader among his peers.
That type dedication, along with coaching (Sam Hadenfeldt and Todd Ekart – the two Wade singled out yesterday) has helped turn Blue into a force throwing the shot.
At one point you would have pegged Blue to possibly be a kid that received a football scholarship out of high school but those injuries and ailments really got in the way of what could have been something special.
Even when he wasn’t on the field, Blue served as a team leader and you could tell in listening to him talk yesterday that the team winning two games this past season was very special for him.
Following this spring Blue will trade in Gering blue for Husker red. When asked about his time at Gering, Blue had plenty to say.
When you see a kid so dedicated to hard work and becoming a winner it’s always nice to see the payoff at the end. A personal congratulations goes out to Wade Blue.
Blue plans to major in nutrition and sports science at the University of Nebraska.
