(AUDIO) Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls sweep doubleheader from Plainview

Plainview-The Howells-Dodge Boys and Girls Basketball Teams swept Plainview on the road Saturday in games heard on 107.9 the Bull as the boys won 63-42 and the girls were 54-33 victors.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of one in the boys game, and won the 2nd quarter 9-7 to take a 25-14 lead into the locker room.

Howells-Dodge erupted in the 3rd quarter, going on a 21-2 run to start the period and staking claim to a 46-16 lead.

The Jaguars led 52-25 at the end of three, outscoring the Pirates 27-11 in the quarter.

Plainview got as close as 20 in the 4th quarter at 53-33, and outscored Howells-Dodge 17-11 in the quarter.

Luke Rocheford had a team-high 11 points to pace the Jaguars while S&W Welding Player of the game RJ Bayer posted 10, 8 coming in the 1st quarter. CharterWest Bank Sportsmanship Award Winner Lane Hegemann, Josh Brester, and Blake Sindelar added 8 apiece while Charlie Dvorak totaled 7.

Howells-Dodge Head Coach Kevin Janata says the balanced scoring is a credit to his team’s depth. “Yeah we knew the matchups for them would be tough. Plainvew doesn’t go very deep into their bench, they try to stick with the starting five. So we knew if we could run the floor and push the tempo we would have the advantage. So we subbed 8, 9, 10 deep, and I think that gave us a good advantage.”

Plainview S&W Welding Player of the Game Brendan Rasmussen and John Schlote each had 13 points to lead the Pirates. Jacob Lingenfelter added 11.

The Pirates fall to 5-6 on the season and host Stanton Tuesday night. The Jaguars improve to 8-4 on the year and host Wisner-Pilger Friday night. Gators Head Coach Duane Mendlik just set the record for the most wins in Nebraska High School Boys Basketball History with 671. “Yeah Duane was coaching at Wisner when I was in high school, and he always has a fundamentally sound team, and they’re full of shooters, and they got a good record right now. And it’s a Sub-District team. And we’d like to make a statement and get after it. It’s going to be a challenge again, but I think it’s something that we can accomplish if we put our minds to it,” Janata said.

In the girls game, the Jaguars got out to a 14-5 lead at the end of the 1st quarter thanks in large part to S&W Welding Player of the Game Erin Prusa, who had 8 of her game-high 23 points in the quarter.

Howells-Dodge outscored Plainview 17-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 31-16 lead into the locker room.

The Jaguars won the 3rd quarter 17-9, and went up 48-25 at the end of three.

The Pirates won the 4th quarter 8-6.

In addition to Prusa’s 23 points, Cassie Pieper had 13 points for Howells-Dodge while CharterWest Bank Sportsmanship Award Winner Jessi Brester chipped in 10.

Plainview S&W Welding Player of the Game Peace Akinnibagbe paced the Pirates with 7 points.

Howells-Dodge Head Coach Scott Polacek on the win. “There were times where I felt we could of broke the game open if we finish a couple of opportunities, but we got that nice lead early on, and we just kind of stayed there. We just needed to come get a win. Our schedule’s been really tough early so we’re just getting whatever we can get.”

The Jaguars improve to 3-9 on the season and take on Lutheran High Northeast on the road Tuesday night. “Lutheran High’s a good team. They’ve got several experienced players back. They really work their man-to-man offense tough. And we’re going to have to really be focused to not give them easy baskets….they’re good at getting easy baskets and we have to stop that right away. And we’ve been doing that a little bit. We’ve been giving teams too easy shots sometimes. So we got to step up and make that happen for sure,” Polacek said.

Plainview falls to 3-8 on the year and hosts Stanton Tuesday night.
