RRN/Howells-Dodge vs. Oakland-Craig Volleyball Match from 9-28-17.

Howells-The Howells-Dodge Volleyball team snapped their three-match losing streak Thursday night, defeating Oakland-Craig 3-0 at home.

The Jaguars won set one 25-19, set two 25-20, and set three 25-23.

Howells-Dodge Head Coach Neil VanLengen says the two teams are similar, but different at the same time.

“They’re a lot like us. They’re just inexperienced. We got a little bit more size than they do, but both teams scrappy. I mean they’re a defensive team. We should be a little more offensive at times. They’re pry a little bit better defensively, and it showed. We hit the ball harder…they played better defense. And that’s what we talked all night is we got to get in position, make plays defensively, cause we knew they were going to tip, hit balls off the block. We’re working hard on our blockers getting our hands over the net. Just too many balls came down on our side on our block.”

Jessi Brester led the Jaguars with 15 kills while Macey Kulhanek and Erin Prusa had 8 apiece.

For Oakland-Craig, Natalia McNeill led the way with a team-high 10 kills.

Knights Head Coach Chelsey Quigley says she’s proud of the way her young team fought given all the injuries they’ve had this season.

“We’ve had our hardships with some pretty significant injuries. And we are very young. 5 of the girls out there…this is their first year of any Varsity Volleyball. So tonight I’m feeling pretty good. These girls came out and they had the fire that I’ve been looking for this entire season. And now that they feel it I hope that we just keep trekkin along and I hope that we can get some wins down the road because they can feel it now, and they have the fire.”

Oakland-Craig takes on Clarkson/Leigh at the Clarkson/Leigh Tournament on Saturday. Howells-Dodge is also in that tournament.

“Yeah we play Cross County first. And then win or lose we’d either play Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family or Pender after that. Winners play, losers play. And there’s 8 teams in it. So yeah, but it’ll be very good competition there. A lot of tough teams. It’ll be a good day just to kind of see where we’re at in the conference. We haven’t played a lot of conference schools. We got I think 6 of the teams there from our conference so it should be kind of a measuring stick for us,” VanLengen said.

The Jaguars improve to 10-5 on the year while the Knights drop to 2-16.
