HASTINGS – The Seward girls and boys basketball teams split games with the Hastings Tigers, Thursday night. In the first game, the Seward girls dominated Hastings, 51-40. In the boys contest, the Tigers held on to beat the Bluejays, 49-33.
The Seward girls led start to finish on the heels of Kayla Luebbe’s 12 points and eight different players scoring. Forcing 10 turnovers in the first half, the Bluejay defense made Hastings uncomfortable all night. Camryn Opfer contributed 10 points. However, the Bluejays struggled from the free throw line, converting 11 of 24 opportunities.
In the boys game, Seward jumped out to a quick, 4-0 lead, but Hastings answered with 12 straight points, including three three pointers and never looked back. Jacob Schroeder dominated in the first half for the Tigers with 10 points, but got into foul trouble early in the second half. Connor Creech picked up right where he left off and finished with a game high 23 points, including going 14-19 at the free throw line. In all, Hastings finished with six three’s. Brett Meyer led Sewarad with 14 points, including 10 points in the second half, but his late charge wasn’t enough. Nate Lliteras contributed 11 points.
Seward will return home Saturday for a girls and boys doubleheader against North Bend Central. Start times have been moved up two hours. Girls will tip at 1pm with the boys to follow at 2:30pm due to weather. Hastings will travel to Crete tonight (Friday). Girls will tip at 4:30pm with the boys to follow at 6pm.
