(AUDIO) NBC’s Rolenc overcomes challenging situation to excel in sports and in the classroom

Recent North Bend Central Graduate and three-sport athlete Ben Rolenc dealt with a tough situation in Junior High and early in his high school career when his Mom was in federal prison in Illinois, serving time for possession of meth with intent to deliver. Rolenc says things weren’t easy at that time.

Rolenc says the situation showed him he had very good leadership abilities in helping his sister do everything she had to do for school as well as make time for sports as his dad had to work two jobs at the time.

Rolenc helped lead the Tigers to the State Football Playoffs this past season, the State Basketball Championship, and is competing in State Track this weekend, and says his friends are to credit for his success.

Rolenc will compete in the shot put and discus at State Track. He is headed to the Marines.

There was a point in time when it didn’t seem certain that Rolenc’s Mom, April, would see him graduate. April has since been released from prison, and is working full-time at Dollar General and playing a major part in NBC’s Booster Club. Ben Rolenc says she’s also going the extra mile for him with his graduation.

Rolenc says the situation helped him mature a lot faster than most normal kids would have.
