North Bend-The North Bend Central Boys and Girls Basketball Teams swept a doubleheader from Wayne at home Thursday night, winning the girls game 50-32 and the boys game 58-39.
In the boys game, the Blue Devils went up 14-13 at the end of one before the Tigers won the 2nd quarter 13-12 to tie the game at 26 at halftime.
North Bend Central blew the hinges off the door in the 3rd quarter, outscoring Wayne 26-1 to lead 52-27 at the end of three.
North Bend Central Head Coach Jon Baehr. “We just talked about going out and being a little more sound with what we were doing. We struggled with some ball screens early, so we made a slight adjustment on how we were guarding those ball screens. And then offensively we just wanted to get out and play with a little better flow, get to the rim a little bit more, get some foul shots, and I thought we were able to accomplish that there in the 3rd quarter. And Wayne’s a really good team so I think we played about the best 8 minutes of basketball we’ve played all year during that time.”
The Blue Devils doubled up the Tigers 12-6 in the 4th quarter.
John Emanuel had 25 points for North Bend Central, which led all scorers, while Chase Ruzicka had 8. Tanner Wietfeld notched 7.
Baehr on Emanuel. “He is such a dynamic player, and he’s so strong. He creates so many opportunities for himself by just playing within the flow of the game. And this isn’t new to him. We have a bunch of guys who can score the ball, but he was our leading scorer last year so it’s not a surprise to see him come out and score in the mid 20’s and kind of get us going. We were in a little foul trouble with Tanner and Jaxon (Wietfeld) both in foul trouble, and John was just dynamite picking that up for us.”
Marcus Fertig led Wayne with 10 points while Kallan Herman and Trevor DeBoer had 9 and 8, respectively.
The Blue Devils fall to 7-6 on the season and host GACC Friday night. The Tigers are now 10-1 on the year and take on Fremont Bergan on the road Saturday. “Going to Bergan on Saturday it’s going to be an absolute dog fight. Their coach does a great job getting them ready, they have some dynamic players. And we definitely are looking forward to that great atmosphere they have going on there. And I think it should be a tremendous challenge for both teams,” Baehr said.
In the girls game, North Bend Central led 12-10 at the end of one, and outscored Wayne 13-5 in the 2nd quarter to take a 25-15 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers outscored the Blue Devils 14-8 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 39-23 at the end of three.
North Bend Central won the 4th quarter 11-9.
Lauren Emanuel led the Tigers and all scorers with 19 points while Megan Ortmeier chipped in 13.
Ashton Boyer, Sidney Biggerstaff, and Tori Kniesche had 5 points apiece to pace the Blue Devils.
Wayne falls to 5-8 on the season and travels to Norfolk Catholic Friday night while the Tigers improve to 8-5 and take on Fremont Bergan on the road Saturday.
North Bend Central Head Coach Aaron Sterup. “Yeah that’s always a tough one. They’re very talented, and they’ve played some really good teams so this year. So it’s going to be a test for us. If we play like we did tonight I think we’ll have a good shot at it.”
Both of Thursday’s games were aired on 107.9 the Bull.
