HASTINGS – It was a thrilling Tuesday night for York fans as the Duke girls and boys won on game winning shots over Adams Central.

In the girls contest, York’s (4-3) Maddie Portwine flipped the game winning lay up with less than three seconds to play and the Dukes escaped Adams Central (6-2) with a, 46-44 victory. After struggling on the offensive end the last several games, York couldn’t miss in the first period. Masa Scheierman knocked in eight points off the bench in the opening quarter to set the tone. However, York struggled to stop Morgan Samuelson in the first as she too scored eight points. Both defenses then stepped up drastically in the second and third quarters. The fourth quarter proved to be the highest scoring period as both teams scored a combined 30 points. With the game tied and 2.6 seconds to play, Portwine drove to the basket in traffic and was able to finish.  She finished with eight points. Scheierman led all York scorers with 14 points. Natalia Dick contributed nine points. The Dukes struggled from the free throw line, going 10-19. Samuelson led Adams Central with 16 points and Libby Trausch came off the bench and scored 13. York’s win ended a two game losing streak.

The boys game was just as entertaining and took a Brady Danielson three at the buzzer to give York (5-1) a 49-46 victory of the Patriots (5-2). In a back and forth game that saw 11 total threes go in, the Dukes ended Adams Central five game winning streak. The first quarter saw a flurry of shots go in as both teams traded buckets. Jeb Lucas of York knocked down three three pointers while Adams Central’s Nolan Sughroue scored eight behind two threes. Like the girls game, both defenses stepped up in the second and third quarters, but like the first period, each team had their studs step up in the final quarter. Danielson went off for 10 points in the fourth while the Patriot’s Haggan Hilgendorf scored 12 in the second half and Thomas Hunt contributed seven in the fourth. With the game tied and 20 second left, York nearly turned the ball over before Danielson splashed a three from the right wing for the thrilling victory. Danielson finished with 20 points and Lucas scored 12. Adams Central had three players score in double figures as Hilgendorf and Hunt each scored 17 points. Sughroue finished with 10 points.
