Participation numbers are at an all-time high for the West Point-Beemer Girls Golf Team this year. Head Coach Keith Eriksen. “This season has shown a lot of excitement. We have 13 girls out for the team. That’s the most we’ve had in program history led by our two seniors, and yeah two-time state qualifier Maddie Erb and also Sophie Alfson. We’ve also got our other two sophomores from last season, Almarosa Urquidez and Kailey Oswald. A lot of those girls put a lot of time in in the summer. And we’ve also got four freshman who were out there all summer long, improving, getting better day-by-day. I’m excited to see what they have to offer this fall along with five juniors.”
Juniors out for this year’s team are Estefania Barragan, Naydeli Medina, Michelle Quinones, Brithany Cervantes, and Jennifer Navarette.
The Freshmen are Allie Boell, Kaitlyn Fehrer, Brook Diekemper, and Shelbie Woerman.
The team has high expectations heading into the season. Eriksen says the team hopes to make state as a team. “Yeah with 13 girls you know everyday in practice we’re going to push each other hard, and competition is good in any sport. And we’re going to work hard everyday in practice, and we’ve already seen that the first week. Competition’s going good. Girls are asking questions, wanting to get better, and wanting to fight for those five varsity spots. And the good thing about 13 girls the varsity spots could change every week based on competition and performance.”
West Point-Beemer opens up the season on Friday, August 17th with the West Point-Beemer Invite at Indian Trails Golf Course in Beemer.
The Cadets will host Districts this year. Eriksen hopes that plays to his team’s advantage so they can qualify for state as a team. “Everything we do during practices and meets is going to be working towards that district tournament. And of course your goal every year is to get to the state tournament. And I think that we do have a good shot to get there as a team. The way districts works top 3 teams qualify for the state tournament. And we’re hoping that our course will help provide us with a little home course advantage so to speak.”
The Cadets will host District C-2 on October 1st.
