(AUDIO) Wisner-Pilger and Oakland-Craig split Basketball Doubleheader

Oakland-The Wisner-Pilger and Oakland-Craig Boys and Girls Basketball Teams split their doubleheader in Oakland Thursday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull as the Knights won the girls game 54-37 and the Gators took the boys contest 58-50.

In the Girls Game, Oakland-Craig went on a 12-0 run to go up 16-4 after the game was tied at 4 in the early going.

The Knights led 22-6 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 14-9 to take a 36-15 lead into the locker room.

Oakland-Craig, who led by as many as 25 at one point in both the 1st and 2nd halfs, won the 3rd quarter 12-8 to lead 48-23 at the end of three.

The Gators outscored the Knights 14-6 in the 4th quarter.

Oakland-Craig’s Dacey Nelson, who was the S&W Welding Player of the Game for Oakland-Craig, led all scorers with 36 points. Oakland-Craig Head Coach Joe Anderson says Nelson is a great player. “She’s someone who’s put in an unlimited amount of time to get to where she’s gotten. And to see her miss last year was really disappointing because I knew how hard she worked, but I’m really, really proud of how she’s battled back and she’s playing really really good basketball right now. I think she’s averaging 28 points a game and really leading us. And with Kennedy (Benne) out here for another couple weeks we really needed her to step up her scoring and we tried to get some of the other girls to step up their scoring, and we’re seeing flashes of that. Just hopefully these next couple of games before break we can put it all together on the offensive side.”

Jordan Wegner had 10 points to pace the Gators, 9 coming in the 2nd half. Reagan Scholting added 8.

Anderson says the game was a tale of two halfs. “We talked about we wanted to come out and play with more intensity this week. And I thought we did that. I was pleased with the 1st half. Even though we did not shoot the ball real well tonight. We were able to create a bunch of offense with our press and our full court defense. But a little disappointed in the 2nd half. I didn’t feel like we came out and played with intensity, and the game was in control, but yet we weren’t able to extend. I know we had a lot of players in the game and things like that, but that’s a part of our game we need to really fix.”

The Gators had 27 turnovers, unofficially.

Oakland-Craig was 6-9 at the free throw line while Wisner-Pilger was 7-17 at the charity stripe.

Wisner-Pilger falls to 1-3 on the season and hosts Wayne Friday night. Oakland-Craig improves to 6-0 and entertains Madison at home on Saturday.

In the Boys Game, the Gators jumped out to a 17-6 lead at the end of one. Both teams scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter, and the score was 33-22 at halftime in favor of Wisner-Pilger.

The Gators won the 3rd quarter 9-7 to go up 42-29 at the end of three.

Oakland-Craig outscored Wisner-Pilger 21-16 in the 4th quarter.

Wisner-Pilger Head Coach Duane Mendlik on the win. “We handled their pressure just well enough in order to just do some things. We knew they were going to come in and really put the pressure on in the full court situation. And we worked quite a bit on that. And for the most part I thought we did a pretty good job until late in the game when we had some of our subs in there. That was a main key I thought to try and get out and get some things going, and we shot the ball relatively well, so that really made a difference.”

The Gators were led in scoring by Caden Jackson, who had a game-high 17 points. S&W Welding Player of the Game Dylan Kneifl added 15 while Cole Jacobsen added 11, all in the second half. Colby Heller chipped in 9.

For Oakland-Craig, S&W Welding Player of the Game Garrison Dodge had 14 points while Robby Mayberry added 12. Colton Thomsen chipped in 9.

Oakland-Craig Head Coach Aaron Meyer says Dodge and Mayberry have really stepped up this season. “Yeah they work hard, they scramble. They try to turn good defense into offense, and whether it’s shooting some outside shots or getting some fast break points. But yeah they’re working hard.”

The Knights were 15-25 at the free throw line while the Gators were 9-16.

Wisner-Pilger improves to 3-1 and hosts Wayne Friday night. “Wayne’s always got good people. And they got some size again this year. They’re a little up and down. I think they played well against some teams and then they didn’t play very well against some others. So it’s going to be a tough game. Anytime we play Wayne. They’re coached very well. And it’s going to be a tough game,” Mendlik said.

Oakland-Craig falls to 3-4 and hosts Madison on Saturday.
