BC’s Upset Bid Falls Short at No. 6 Dordt

BC’s Upset Bid Falls Short at No. 6 Dordt

The Briar Cliff women’s volleyball team played its fourth-straight top-25 opponent Wednesday night, and the first one on the road with a contest at No. 6 Dordt. The Chargers were able to push the Defenders to the brink but Dordt outlasted the Cliff 3-2 in five sets. The loss forced the Chargers to 11-4 overall and 2-4 in the GPAC and the Defenders improved to 17-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

The game was a back-and-fourth contest with Dordt winning sets one, three and five (19-25, 20-25, 10-15) and Briar Cliff taking sets two and four (25-19, 25-19). The Defenders outhit the Chargers .252-.181 in the matchup but the Cliff was able to stay in the game with 12.0 blocks and forcing Dordt into 25 attack errors. BC had 48 kills and 21 errors on 149 attacks, compared to Dordt having 66 kills and 25 errors on 163 attacks. The Defenders also had advantages in assists (57-44) and digs (70-63), while the Chargers held a 6-3 edge in service aces and a 12-7 advantage in blocks.

The Charger offense saw three players reach double figures in kills with Toni Beck leading the way with 14 kills, followed by Courtney Schafer with 11 and Emily Sanburg chipped in 10 K’s. Kiaya Alderson also had six kills and Keely Woods added five. Laura Barry had a team-high 24 assists and Delaney Meyer was second with 19 helpers. Barry and Meyer both had two aces to lead the team and both setters also had six digs. Three Chargers also had double-digit digs with Breanne Hankins leading the way with 18, trailed by Katie Berg with 12 and Brooklyn Tolliverwith 10. Alderson had a team leading seven blocks and Olivia Tomlin was next with four rejections.

Dordt’s offense was led by Ema Altena with 19 kills and Leah Kamp notched 18 K’s. Jamie Gesink had a near triple-double with 56 assists, 11 digs and seven kills.

Briar Cliff will be looking to snap its four-game losing streak on Saturday with a road contest at Concordia. Opening serve between the Chargers and Bulldogs is slated for 5 p.m.
