Briar Cliff Baseball loses twice to Augustana

The Briar Cliff baseball team dropped both games of Tuesday’s doubleheader to Augustana at Bishop Mueller Field. The Vikings took game one 13-4 and won game two 3-2 after six innings of play due to darkness. AU improved to 18-1 with the wins, while BC slipped to 14-9.

In game one, Briar Cliff led 1-0 after the first inning but Augustana responded and led 5-1 after scoring two runs in the second frame and adding three in the third. The Vikings burnt the Chargers for six runs in the top of the fifth and the Cliff only added one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 11-2 in favor of Augustana. AU chipped in another run in the sixth, while BC added two. The Vikings notched another insurance run in the seventh inning and won by a tally of 13-4. Augustana outhit Briar Cliff 16-3 in the contest. AU had one mistake, while BC recorded three errors.

Brady Harpenau and Rodney Scarver paced the Cliff with one double each. Harpenau, Scarver and Nick Robinson all had one hit apiece. Harpenau and Robinson shared the team lead in RBI, each recording two. Harpenau, Scarver, Logan Adam and Michael Anthony each crossed home plate on one occasion. Tyler Williams was tagged with the pitching loss after giving up eight hits, seven runs and five errors in 4.1 innings of play, while fanning one batter.

In game two, the Chargers lead 2-0 after the opening frame. Avery Foltz put the Cliff on the board first when he scored off a walk. Harpenau made the score 2-0 after he scored on a fielder’s choice. Briar Cliff led until the fourth inning when Augustana scored two runs of its own to knot the game up at 2-2. The Vikings added one run in the top of the sixth and led 3-2. The Chargers were unable to even the score after six innings of play and the game was called due to darkness (no lights/player safety). Augustana notched five hits and zero errors, compared to the Cliff piling up two hits and two errors in game two.

Arnulfo Gutierrez and Tyler Vanderham each recorded one hit apiece. Gutierrez and Scarver led the team with two RBI’s each, while Foltz and Harpenau both crossed home plate on one occasion. Connor Christiansen suffered the pitching loss after allowing one hit in 0.1 innings of play.

Briar Cliff will visit Morningside on Tuesday. Opening pitch between the Chargers and Mustangs is slated for 4 p.m. at Lewis & Clark Park in Sioux City.
