Briar Cliff Baseball splits doubleheader at Mount Marty

The Briar Cliff baseball team earned a split of Wednesday’s doubleheader at Mount Marty with the Chargers winning game one 5-3 and falling in game two 4-3. Briar Cliff is now 17-18 overall this season and 6-10 in the GPAC, while Mount Marty now sits at 22-14 overall and 8-8 in league games.

Briar Cliff outhit Mount Marty 10-5 in the game one victory and was able to overcome three errors and zero by the Lancers. The Chargers also left three runners on base but were able to force the Lancers to strand nine players on base. Briar Cliff led wire-to-wire after scoring two runs in the first, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, compared to Mount Marty scoring one run in the first, fifth and seventh innings. Avery Foltz wasted little time giving BC the lead, homering on the second pitch of the game and Sawyer Olson pushed the lead to 2-0 later in the inning with a sac fly to left field to score Peyton Griesert. BC then went up 3-1 in the top of the fourth as Nick Robinson scored off a single by Jacob Hom. The Lancers made the score 3-2 in the fifth until the Chargers took advantage of a squeeze play in the sixth with Hom laying down a bunt to score Arnulfo Gutierrez and pushing the lead to 4-2. Mateo Shannon added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for the Cliff with a solo homer to center field to make the score 5-2 before Mount Marty scored once in the bottom of the seventh for the 5-3 win for BC.

Foltz, Gutierrez and Hom all had two hits for the Chargers in the game, trailed by Robinson, Olson, Rodney Scarver and Shannon with one hit each. Hom had a team-high two RBI and five players scored for the Blue & Gold. TJ Egbarts got win the on the mound for the Cliff with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work and Nicholas Cole notched the save, pitching 1.0 inning.

In game two, the Chargers had plenty of scoring opportunities but left 10 runners stranded to fall by a final score of 4-3 despite outhitting the Lancers 10-5 in the contest and having no errors. BC scored first in the game with a run in the top of the first with Robinson hitting a double to plate Gutierrez. Mount Marty then took control of the game with a run in the second and three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead. The Cliff’s rally would fall short as they scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Olson had a single to score Egbarts and Logan Adam added another double to score Olson. The Charger offense went quiet after that in the one-run loss.

Robinson led the Cliff in the game, going 3-4 at the plate with one RBI. Gutierrez and Adam both added two hits and Egbarts, Olson and Hom had one hit apiece. Olson and Adam both had one RBI and Egbarts, Gutierrez and Olson all scored once. Tyler Williams suffered the loss in his 2.0 innings with one K and Zayne Mowen recorded four K’s in 4.0 innings of relief pitching.

Briar Cliff is scheduled to be at home this weekend, hosting Concordia in GPAC doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch of game one both days is slated for 1 p.m.
