The Briar Cliff baseball team earned a split on Thursday at Doane. The Chargers claimed game one 4-0 and the Tigers took game two 7-4. Briar Cliff is now 16-15 overall and 5-7 in the GPAC, while the Tigers are 17-15 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
Brogan Secrist put the Blue and Gold on the scoreboard in the opening inning of game one when he scored off a Nick Robinson single. The Cliff extended its lead to 2-0 in the third frame when Secrist singled to center field to score Avery Foltz. The Chargers extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth inning when Foltz scored off an Arnulfo Gutierrez ground out and Secrist reached home plate off a Robinson double to left field. Briar Cliff racked up four runs, eight hits and one error in the contest, compared to Doane notching zero runs, six hits and no errors. T.J. Egbarts pitched the shutout for the Chargers and struck out four batters.
Secrist led the Blue and Gold with three hits, trailed by Robinson and Foltz racking up two hits apiece and Logan Adam adding a hit. Robinson had a team-high two RBI, while Gutierrez and Secrist also contributed one RBI each. Secrist and Foltz shared the team lead in runs scored with two apiece.
The Cliff started out with the 1-0 lead again in game two with Secrist scoring off a Gutierrez double to center field in the top of the inning. Doane responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame to knot the score up at 1-1. The Tigers added a run in the third inning and had their first lead of the day at 2-1. Doane piled up three runs in the fifth inning and added two insurance runs in the sixth to bring the score to 7-1 going into the final inning. Briar Cliff attempted to surmount a comeback, piling up three runs in the seventh inning but ultimately fell short. In the final inning, Rodney Scarver crossed home plate after a Foltz double and both Foltz and Adam scored off a Jacob Hom single. Doane won by a final score of 7-4 and the Tigers outhit the Chargers 10-7.
Gutierrez, Robinson, Foltz, Hom, Sawyer Olson and Brady Harpenau all had one hit in game two. Hom had a team-high two RBI, followed by Gutierrez and Foltz with one RBI each. Secrist, Scarver, Adam and Foltz each scored one run apiece. Tyler Williams fanned one batter and suffered the pitching loss.
Briar Cliff will visit Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa on Saturday for a doubleheader. Opening pitch between the Chargers and Red Raiders is slated for 1:30 p.m.
