The Briar Cliff men’s basketball team opened 2018-19 play Monday night with a contest at Presentation and came away with a 98-73 victory.
A two-point score by Jeff Daubanton and pair of free throws by Erich Erdman put the Chargers up 4-0 before the Saints went on an 9-0 run to start the first half. The score went back and forth for a few possessions but a three-point basket by Ethan Freidel with 12 minutes left in the first half would give BC the lead for good. The Chargers took a 45-30 lead into the locker room. Briar Cliff continued to pull away in the second half and earned its first win of the season.
Freidel came off the bench for the Blue and Gold to score a career high 27 points and went 7-7 from the free throw line. As a team, the Cliff went 47 percent from the field, 44 percent from beyond the arc and 76 percent from the charity stripe. Erdman and Jay Wolfe scored 16 points each. Jackson Lamb grabbed six rebounds, followed by Wolfe and Nic Lutmer with five a piece. Jaden Kleinhesselink dished out five assists.
Presentation shot percentages of 46 from the field, 44 from the three-point line and 67 from the free throw line. Jahleel Stevens paced the Saints with 12 points and three assists. Quadres Lollis had five rebounds.
The Chargers will travel to Kansas this weekend for a pair of games. They will tipoff against (RV) Friends University Friday night at 7 p.m. in Wichita.
